"Given predictions that these devices will be in short supply if a pandemic strikes in the near future, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services asked the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies to investigate the potential for reuse of disposable respirators or masks. A new report from IOM says that there is currently no simple, reliable way to decontaminate these devices that would enable people to safely use them more than once."

"Even the best respirator or surgical mask will do little to protect a person who uses it incorrectly, and we know relatively little about how effective these devices will be against flu even when they are used correctly," added co-chair Donald S. Burke, professor of international health and epidemiology, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore.

"Disposable masks and respirators do not lend themselves to reuse because they work by trapping harmful particles inside the mesh of fibers of which they are made. This hazardous buildup cannot be cleaned out or disinfected without damaging the fibers or other components of the device such as the straps or nose clip, the committee found."
일회용 마스크와 호흡기는 유해한 입자를 마스크의 섬유 그물망 안에 가두기 때문에 재사용이 불가능하다. 섬유 조직 혹은 끈, 코 클립 같은 부속품을 손상시키지 않고는 이 위험한 축적물을 제거하거나 소독할 수 없다는 것을 위원회는 발견하였다.
However, the following steps would allow a person to reuse a disposable N95 respirator if necessary. A protective covering such as a medical mask or a clear plastic face shield should be worn over the respirator to protect it from surface contamination. The respirator should be carefully stored between uses, and the wearer should wash his hands before and after handling it and the device used to shield it.
하지만 필요한 경우에 다음 순서로 일회용 N95 호흡기를 재사용 할 수도 있다. 표면 오염으로부터 호흡기를 보호하기 위해 호흡기 위에 의료용 마스크나 투명 플라스틱 안면 보호대 같은 보호 덮개를 착용해야 한다. 호흡기는 재사용 할 때까지 주의해서 보관해야 하며, 사용자는 호흡기와 보호 덮개 착용 전후에 손을 씻어야 한다.

Yes, you can wash the mask skin by hand with soap or in the laundry machine under hand-wash mode and hang dry.
Please make sure to not tumble dry the mask skin and to detach the filter and the valves before washing. Do not store it in a bag unless fully dried."
비누를 사용하여 마스크의 외피를 손세척 혹은 세탁기의 손세탁 모드로 씻고 걸어 놓고 말린다. 주의할 점은,
1. 마스크의 외피를 (고속 회전하는) 세탁기로 말리지 말 것
