Conjunctions, when & if

 

1. when or if

To talk about situations or conditions that are facts, repeated, or predictable,

we can use either IF or WHEN.

[ if/when + simple present tense verb form ]

If/When I go home, I have dinner.

You can get a driver's license if/when you’re 18.

2. if

We use if for unknown, unreal, or possible situations or conditions.

If it snows this year, I'll go skiing.

If you see my mom, say hello to her for me!

If you see suspicious activity, report it to a local law enforcement.

If you arrive too late, you are not allowed to take the exam.

3. when

We use when for the time of future situations or conditions that we are certain of.

When I get home, I'll watch soaps online.

I'll give you a ring when I get home from school.
